UNITED NATIONS DAY 2024

Message by Muhammad Atta Ur Rehman, Chairman of the Institute of International Peace Leaders, on United Nations Day, 24 October 2024

In particular, our hearts go out to the people of Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine, who have faced immense hardship due to ongoing conflicts. In Gaza, the people endure daily violence and humanitarian crises, yet the UN continues to advocate for peace and the protection of human rights. In Sudan, the internal conflict has displaced thousands, and the UN’s humanitarian efforts provide critical support to those in dire need. And in Ukraine, the war has had profound global implications, yet the UN’s diplomatic and humanitarian efforts remain vital in seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict and supporting those affected by the devastation.

The rise of terrorism in parts of Africa and Asia also continues to pose significant threats to global peace and security. From violent extremist groups in the Sahel region of Africa to ongoing insurgencies in various Asian countries, the UN’s commitment to countering terrorism through coordinated international efforts is more crucial than ever. The UN’s peacekeeping missions and its broader work in combating extremism and fostering stability have been essential in these regions, offering hope to those living under the shadow of violence.

This past year, we have also witnessed the catastrophic impacts of climate change, from destructive floods and wildfires to droughts and other extreme weather patterns. These environmental crises are compounded by the strain on vulnerable populations, further threatening global stability. The UN has been instrumental in promoting environmental stewardship and advocating for bold climate action, reminding us that climate change is not just an environmental issue—it is a matter of human survival.

As we strive towards the realization of the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the United Nations continues to inspire and guide the global community. Its focus on addressing poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation through peaceful and inclusive policies has brought the world closer to achieving these critical goals. In times of global turbulence, the UN’s vision of sustainable peace and justice serves as a beacon for all of humanity.

I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, whose steadfast leadership continues to guide the UN in these challenging times. His advocacy for peace, climate action, and human rights is a source of inspiration for the international community. My heartfelt thanks also go to Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva, for her remarkable leadership at the forefront of international diplomacy and coordination.

To the countless UN staff members, diplomats, humanitarians, and volunteers working tirelessly across the globe—your dedication is nothing short of heroic. In conflict zones, in the fight against climate change, and in addressing economic and humanitarian crises, your efforts bring hope and relief to millions. You are the true embodiment of the UN’s mission, and the world is indebted to you for your courage and selfless service.

In these difficult economic conditions, where many countries are facing instability and inequality, the UN’s role in promoting inclusive and sustainable policies is indispensable. The UN’s focus on economic resilience and social protection provides a framework for addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of global prosperity.

I also wish to acknowledge the vital role played by organizations, civil society groups, and individuals working in partnership with the UN to uphold human rights, deliver humanitarian aid, and foster peace. Your efforts are a testament to the enduring power of international solidarity, and your contribution to achieving the UN’s objectives is invaluable.

As we reflect on the past year, we must reaffirm our hope for a more peaceful and just future. Despite the many challenges we face—wars, terrorism, economic instability, and environmental crises—the UN remains our best hope for navigating these complex issues. Let us continue to support the United Nations as it leads the way in building a world that prioritizes peace, justice, and sustainability for all.

On this United Nations Day, let us renew our commitment to the mission of the UN and work together to build a better, more peaceful, and equitable future for all people across the globe.
