UNHCR - United Nations High Commission for Refugees

Congratulations AND A BIG THANK YOU UNHCR!….still at it for 70 years now!

This post features and highlights the tremendous and vital work (for so many people) of the office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The UNHCR was created in 1950, during the aftermath of the Second World War, to help millions of Europeans who had fled or lost their homes.

Today, 70 years later, this global organization is still hard at work, protecting and assisting refugees around the world. And nowadays, the UNHCR is THE UN agency mandated to aid and protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people; and to assist in their voluntary repatriation, local integration, or resettlement to a third country.

The start of the 21st century has seen UNHCR help with major refugee crises in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. UNHCR now has more than 17,324 personnel and work in 135 countries with a whopping $8.6 billion budget in 2019 (UNHCR, 2020)…….Awesome!!!
